Furniture Renovation

I am a tenth-grade student in The Ahliyyah school for girls. I got my idea after I was told to clean out the basement, where I found many different pieces of furniture that were either old or damaged. Since it was lockdown, I didn’t really have anything to do, so I got the idea of renovating these old pieces of furniture, not only will this give me something to do during lockdown it also promotes renovation and sustainability. My goal is to renovate, used or even damaged pieces. in order to come up with new and modernized designs, leading to a product or a model. Through this idea there will be more sustainability since old furniture will be recycled, and it will be more affordable since new furniture is expensive. The plan is to make my final product a renovated chair model symbolizing sustainability and self-expression through renovated pieces. Due to Covid-19 and social distancing, this idea can be perceived as a family project that promotes sustainability. The most relevant global context would be “Personal and Cultural Expression” since it explores ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity. Through exploring this global context, I will come up with different designs, the final design should be both modernized and expressive. Throughout the whole process of creating my product, I learned many things regarding the new information related to my topic, I learned about the benefits of renovation and its impact, I also learned about the furniture industry including the materials and tools that they used, and the way they approach creating the product and designing it. Most challenges I faced were technical issues regarding the product, I also faced a challenge in developing a simple yet modern design because the chair that I decided to renovate was already simple, so simplifying it even more was a challenge. Another challenge was using carpentry tools for the first time. The main thing that I learned throughout this project, was time management and organization. These skills supported me a lot resulting in a product that I am proud of.
