AutoCAD is the most popular commercial CAD software. For a number of reasons, it was first and continues to be the most important application in the AutoCAD family.

Etymology
The word "AutoCAD" is short for "Automated CAD" and was first announced at the 1984 Winter Consumer Electronics Show as "AutoCAD 1982 Edition". The original announcement specified AutoCAD for the Apple II and III, and that the first version would run in 8- and 16-bit color.

In the first release of AutoCAD, the user interface was limited to a command line that allowed users to load a drawing, begin drawing the lines or curves, and save a drawing. It also allowed users to view and edit the current drawing. The first release, AutoCAD 1.0, was written in the Lisp dialect, LISP, which was chosen for its ease of use. In the original version, lines and arcs were connected by simple tangent points.
Release history
Despite the title of the first release, AutoCAD was not the first CAD program. The first commercial CAD program was the Deltagraph, marketed by the Brazilian company GEP. When the Macintosh version of AutoCAD was released, it was noted as "the first Macintosh CAD program".
The first published Computer Programmer's Manual was produced by Deltagraph. The original introduction to the software stated that Deltagraph was developed by Deltagraph Systems and released to the public in 1981. However, the manual does not make reference to the "Deltagraph" name, only referring to "Souza" as the author and the product as "a software package for engineers." Autodesk produced four file formats in their history of CAD software: the dBaseIII, 3D Studio, B-rep, and DXF formats. All of these are still in use, and are available in every AutoCAD version, regardless of platform. DXF format is the standard file format for raster graphics. DXF stands for Drawing Exchange Format, and is the industry standard for raster exchange, also referred to as raster format.
dBaseIII is AutoCAD's older file format, used from the original version of AutoCAD up until 2002. dBaseIII is no longer supported as a native file format in AutoCAD 2010 and later.
