Why use Photoshop?
Although an image can be created in many different ways, Photoshop is the best tool for both creating and modifying images. The flexible editing system combined with the powerful Adobe Bridge application makes it the industry standard. But why is it so popular?
Even though it’s a bit old school and not quite as user-friendly as other imaging software, Photoshop does offer a wide array of features for image manipulation. Professional users love the fact that it’s a full-fledged image editing application that can be used to manipulate an image beyond the photo editing features (cropping, retouching and text editing).
An important factor in understanding how to use Photoshop for your own creative expression is to understand the difference between “professionals” and “amateurs.” You can become as good at Photoshop as the next pro. But don't lose sight of the fact that even the best Photoshop users have a job to do.
In fact, the sheer number of features in Photoshop makes it a big, unwieldy application that makes it well-nigh impossible for new users to become even competent users. The fact is that only a fraction of Photoshop's features (like the Clone Stamp tool) are usable by beginners. That’s why you should work your way through the tutorials (listed below) on basic image editing. Photoshop has a lot to teach even the most experienced user. Here are just a few of the reasons you should use Photoshop.
1. Save money.
A stand-alone license for Photoshop will cost you $600, which works out to about $50 a month. However, if you buy multiple image editing programs, you'll end up paying up to $450 a year. A standard license for the Sony Vegas video editing software is $199, which works out to about $15 a month.
You can always upgrade your Photoshop license for $150 per year. Or, if you’re a student, you can download the "Student Version" of Photoshop and "Authorize" it. This license is currently $25. You can download a free 30-day trial of Photoshop through the Adobe website and then upgrade if you find it useful.

Due to its similar look-and-feel to Photoshop, Photoshop Elements can be a smooth transition for people with experience in Photoshop.
A typical Photoshop-type workflow is to open an image, make edits to it, and save the image with the same name. This is referred to as “Save for Web and Devices” or “Save for Web”. When someone wants to use an image they can upload it to a web server.
With Photoshop Elements, people are able to manipulate images within a program without needing to save them for web use.
Exposing
In Adobe Photoshop, when you go to edit an image you will notice an “Exposure” button in the top-right corner of the window. Photoshop Elements has its own exposure slider.
The first step to editing an image is to change it from a grayscale picture to a color picture.
Using the “Exposure” button, you can set your desired exposure.
Your desired exposure settings will always appear as a slider in the bottom-right corner of the image.
Channel Settings
Channels are a type of tab you can add to the image. They are useful for adding color to a specific part of the image.
Adding a channel allows a user to edit individual colors in an image.
Within Photoshop Elements, there are 5 channels available to use.
If your image has many shades of a specific color, you can group them together and apply different color settings to the groups. This way, if you wish, you can apply different settings to a section of the image without having to deal with all the swatches at once.
Removing Channels
Removing channels is a common practice when editing a picture. People will want to remove any extra color they don’t need in an image.
There are two ways to do this:
You can drag the Channels icon on the tabs to remove all the channels from the image.
Select the icon and press Delete
You can use the Channel menu to hide the channels you do not want.
Adobe Photoshop does have a “Remove Color” option for this function.
Adding a Layer
Layers are a way for a user to separate the different parts of an image. They are helpful for editing multiple parts of an image at once. Photoshop Elements has its own way to add layers.
