AutoCAD History
AutoCAD is a product of the Autodesk lineage. Autodesk started out as a subsidiary of the Rand Corporation, and Rand acquired Cadsoft, a leading CAD company, which was acquired by Autodesk in 1985. Autodesk was formerly named Micrografx.

In 1985 Autodesk purchased Cadsoft, the developer of AutoCAD. Cadsoft then became known as Autodesk CAD.

In 1989 Autodesk changed its name to Autodesk Inc. to reflect the diversification of its product offering, which included now also desktop publishing and multimedia software, among other things.

In the beginning, CAD software was developed for use in architecture, civil engineering, and mechanical engineering. However, over time, software developers have included design and drafting tools for other disciplines, such as electrical, plumbing, and landscape design.
