Overview:
Graphic novels are increasing in popularity, and there is a growing body of research and information available about these books and their usefulness in literacy instruction. This Wakelet Pathfinder (or Lib Guide) is a tool to help you navigate some of that information. This pathfinder is geared towards educators looking for more information on what graphic novels are and how to use them with students, so it is meant primarily for professional educators and students in university education programs, not K-12 students, although some of the resources shared are meant to be used and shared with students.

In the past, all fictional graphic novels were classified in the Library of Congress Classification schedules in the span PN6700-6790 with comic books, strips, etc. When the Children's and Young Adults Cataloging Program (CYAC) started cataloging them, a new classification number, PZ7.7, was created for children’s graphic novels.
Subject Headings for juvenile graphic novels (from the Library of Congress):
"Each graphic novel cataloged by the CYAC Program will have, as its first subject heading, Graphic novels. Following that, there may be topical headings. The final heading will be the genre/form heading, Graphic novels. So the subject heading array for a graphic novel in which a cat and mouse share an adventure might be:
     650 #1 $a Graphic  novels.
     650 #1 $a Cats $v  Fiction.
     650 #1 $a Mice $v  Fiction.
     650 #1 $a Adventure and  adventurers $v Fiction.
     655 #0 $a Graphic  novels."

When searching for graphic novels and resources to use with younger students, here is a word of caution. As some pieces (particularly in the anime and manga realm) are more adult in nature, you may find that these search results are not appropriate for young students. Be advised that some content is more mature. The materials and resources shared in this pathfinder are geared more towards graphic novels for elementary and middle grades students, and do not delve into this, but there is quite a bit of information out there related to anime and manga if this is an area of interest for you or your older students.
