I am an aspiring social worker so it is fascinating analyzing the different ways that citizens cope in V for Vendetta and Children of Men. While V is more theatrical and flamboyant, CoM is more raw and relatable. The struggle is more visible and destitute in Com and Theo has a host of vices used to cope-- drinking, gambling, smoking (cigarettes and weed), and then there's Quietus which is available to all citizens to kill themselves. In a way, Quiteus is a merciful offering by the government because everyone has lost hope and suffering mentally, kind of like physician assisted suicide. But for those who chose life, many are checking out in other ways. No one wants to acknowledge the horrible reality. Interestingly, when Theo makes the human connection with Kee, we see less and less self-destruction. Whereas V for Vendetta has few escapes. One character becomes obsessed with dolls, a few  others solicit prostitutes and V turns to the arts, music and theatre. It seems his coping mechanism is action, which seems healthy except his protest is murder, leading to his ultimate demise. What does it mean to be human and have real feelings of despair and hopelessness, but also hope and passion? How do we deal with these feelings and how can we overcome the pain? Connection and purpose are the most valuable assets one can have.
