7. **6. Save the photo.**
After you finish retouching and possibly adding text, you have to save your photo. If you haven't already named your file, you'll want to give it a file name; for example, "File Name: House in the Country.png."
You can find all the settings to adjust in the Save dialog box, shown in Figure 2-9, located at the top left of your screen, near the top of the Photoshop window.

  8. **7. Start creating a new file.**
Again, you can create a new file in either Photoshop Elements or Photoshop. Simply choose Create New from the File menu.
(If you're using Adobe Photoshop CS5, go to the File menu and click Open.)
If the current file you have open in your photo editor is a smart object (one that may contain other image layers such as an adjustment layer), you see the Adjustments dialog box, shown in Figure 2-10, appear. Click the Adjustments tab to create new layers and make changes to the adjustments layer.

  9. **8. Make adjustments.**
Adjustments work exactly the same as layers do. And just like layers, you can make any adjustments (saturation, brightness, contrast, white balance, blacks, whites, or reds) to your image. You can adjust the entire image, or you can make more selective adjustments. The big difference is that you can't change the properties of an adjustment layer without "borrowing" from other layers.
The Adjustments dialog box has the same options as the Layers window, but you have to use the Adjustments panel to make the changes. Click the Adjustments panel to bring up the Adjustments dialog box, as shown in Figure 2-11.
