This book introduces the reader to concepts of community health nursing with a focus on advocacy, prevention, and empowerment. The text emphasizes disease prevention promotion and health education within populations in various settings including schools, communities, hospitals, prisons and correctional facilities emphasizing best practices for clinic-based services. There are 23 chapters with case studies at the end of each chapter which is designed to reinforce clinical skills or to illustrate what can go wrong with patients if certain principles are not followed.  The book is written in a format that is more applicable to students of community health nursing than other texts, with emphasis on client advocacy and self-care.This new edition (2015) is an evidence-based text that provides students with the information, knowledge, and skills needed to work effectively in community health settings.  The text is also designed to reflect the important role of advocacy with an emphasis on population-based health with critical analysis of issues concerning community health nurses. It begins with an introduction to the field of community health nursing, an overview of the healthcare system, and a review of concepts in biopsychosocial nursing. Chapter 2 discusses core competencies for community health nurses, chapter 3 reviews primary prevention strategies and chapter 4 reviews secondary prevention strategies.  Chapters 5 and 6 introduces the reader to conceptual frameworks and models of community health nursing with chapters 7-9 discussing research in community health nursing. The next five chapters of the text (10-14) focus on topics such as public health and epidemiology, mental health and substance abuse, domestic violence, healthy lifestyles and chronic disease management. Chapter 15 discusses the role of advocacy for patients with HIV/AIDS. Chapter 16 focuses on domestic violence while chapter 17 discusses chronic disease management. Chapters 18-21 review important concepts such as leadership, sexuality education, primary care for women, partnering with tribes/indigenous people, working in correctional facilities and environmental health while chapter 22 focuses on empowerment for community health nurses.  The last five chapters (23-27) review patient assessment and assessment methods, provision of primary care for seniors, practice management/work environment, health evaluation skills, and termination.In this text Maglaya discusses the role of the nurse as a leader in the health care delivery system. The role of leader is important because effective leaders impact healthcare delivery within their organization/clinic.
