History of The Caravan Era The first regular American television program was produced by NBC News on February 21, 1940, hosted by Lowell Thomas () and broadcast weekdays at 6:45 p.m. It was just Lowell Thomas in front of a television camera during his radio show on the NBC network, a television simulcast that was only viewable in New York City. In June 1940, NBC, through its New York flagship station W2XBS (renamed commercial WNBT in 1941, now WNBC), broadcast 30 ½ hours of coverage of the Republican National Convention live and direct from Philadelphia on Channel One. The station used multiple rebroadcasts from Philadelphia to New York City and on to upstate New York to rebroadcast W2XB in Schenectady (now WRGB), making it one of NBCs first network programs. Due to the wartime and technical limitations of live broadcasting of the 1944 convention, although videos of the events were reportedly shown on WNBT the following day. Around this time, there were occasional scheduled quasi-network newscasts originating from NBCs WNBT in New York City (WNBC) and reportedly airing on WPTZ (now KYW-TV) in Philadelphia and WRGB in Schenectady, New York. In 1950, David Brinkley began working as a correspondent for the program in Washington, DC, but received little attention off-line until he teamed up with Chet Huntley in 1956. By 1955, the Camel News Caravan was left with the news behind Douglas Edwards of CBS, and Swayze had already lost the lukewarm support of NBC management. The following year, NBC replaced the Huntley-Brinkley Report show. From 1951, NBC News was run by executive correspondent Bill McAndrew, who reported to Vice President for News and Public Affairs J. Davidson Taylor. In 1961, Huntley-Brinkley-era NBC News had approximately 700 correspondents and cameramen working around the world.
