To create a layer, you open a new image. If you already have an existing image on your computer, you can simply drag it into Photoshop to make a new image. It's that simple.
At the lower right side of the program's screen (see Figure 3-1), a panel opens, with tabs that help you navigate through the workspace. The tab for the Layers panel is labeled Layers, as shown in Figure 3-1. (Look for the little arrow next to it.) Clicking this tab launches the Layers panel, which I discuss in the next section.

  Press the Option (Windows) or   (Mac) key and choose View⇒All Visible Layers to display all your currently open layers. On the top of the Layers panel is the name of your currently active image. In most cases, the image you most recently worked on is active. To move on to the next image, click the little green plus sign at the top of the panel.
Selecting a layer
To draw any kind of image, Photoshop needs a starting point. Your work starts with a layer, which you create by clicking in the Photoshop workspace and clicking the New Layer button. Your work then resides in layers that help you create multiple images in a single image editor window. (See Figure 3-2.)
Your Layers panel represents the windows into your image, and the layers are your workspaces to create and manipulate your image. Photoshop provides two, nondisappearing, layers. The bottom layer is empty and transparent for editing, and the top layer is currently a copy of the image. You can copy a layer and paste it onto the top of your image, or you can paste a layer below the active layer.

To select a layer, follow these steps:
  1. Select the New Layer button, shown in the margin in Figure 3-2.
This button to the left of the Layers panel's name tab is a little cloud that looks like a sheet of paper with a plus sign on it.
  2. If you want to select a layer at the bottom of the Layers panel, click that plus sign on the top-right side of the Layers panel's name tab.

Photoshop Elements is a great choice if you want to create and edit standard, medium-resolution images, such as JPEG files.
You can also use Photoshop Elements for high-resolution images, but it is not as powerful as Photoshop.

With the latest version of Photoshop Elements, you can create video effects using the built-in video editing tools.
Video effects include filters such as the ones you can get in professional video editing software like Adobe Premiere.
You can make a color cast, which gives the image a sepia or black and white look. You can also sharpen, blur, fix whites, enhance color and apply cool or warm colors.

Right-click on the layer below the raw image layer and select New Adjustment Layer > New Color Cast Layer.
