The software is based on DGN - a proprietary geometric database. It was initially released for microcomputers with internal graphics controllers, which were in short supply at the time of release. AutoCAD is one of the world's most popular CAD programs and is available in more than 60 countries worldwide. Some of its competitors are MicroStation, MicroStation for Windows, Creo, Maya, Inventor and Microsoft Visio.
