The film was jointly produced by several individuals including Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Vidhu Vinod Chopra, under their production company Dream Factory and Universal Pictures, respectively. It features Abhay Deol, Ileana D'Cruz, Raveena Tandon, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Pankaj Kapoor in pivotal roles, and was theatrically released in India on 29 August 2014. It also marks the acting debut of Vidya Balan and Pooja Batra. The film was critically acclaimed, and won several awards at several award ceremonies.
The film is loosely based on the life of Madhu Kishwar. At the 69th Filmfare Awards South, it received a nomination for Best Actor for Deol and a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Tandon. At the 2014 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, it received a "Critics' Award" for Tandon. It also won the best film award at the International MAMI Film Festival for Best Actor at the 2016 Montreal World Film Festival, for Deol. The film was also nominated for Best Performance by an Actor for Deol at the 2nd Mirchi Music Awards, where it was defeated by Sanjay Dutt. It was screened at the International Film Festival of India, and at the International Film Festival of Kerala, becoming the first Indian film to be selected for these two festivals.
Plot 
In the early 1980s, three villages, Jhajjar, Kanpur and Chauddagram, are about to face a crisis of illiteracy, due to the government's decision to discontinue sending children to school. This results in a conflict between the men and women of the villages, where women believe that they must have at least an elementary education in order to participate in society.
In Jhajjar village, Madhu Kishwar (Ileana D'Cruz) is a rich, well-educated woman who is married to Naveen Kishwar (Ranveer Singh), an unemployed laborer, and mother of a seven-year-old daughter, Kamna. Kamna is close to her father, but Naveen is emotionally distant from her and the village. Madhu tries to change his behaviour.
In the neighbouring village of Kanpur, Suman Rangnekar (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) is a poor widower who has a teenage daughter, Arushi. Arushi, who hates her father, wants to leave home,
