Argument Essay

Argumentative essays ask the writer to either support, qualify, or challenge the points provided in the source material. In argumentative essays, the writer must focus on a claim made in the source material. The writer can use anything and everything they know to prove and support their point. An argumentative essay requires writers to analyze the topic and generate information and evidence that can back up their position, such as using strong logic, evidence, and other elements of argument. When writing an argumentative essay for AP Lang the writer needs to firmly declare a position in the matter. Concession and refutation help define the writer's stance, but it’s how the writer elaborates on his/her opinion that really makes the essay effective. The points help ‘argue’ the point and convince the readers that the position has its merits.
