Who is Allison Bechdel?
Allison Bechdel began her writing career with Dykes to Watch Out For. She sent her single drawing label to a feminist newspaper, called Womanews and her first work was published in June of 1983. Allison had given people a look in the lesbian community to better understand them as people. Through the year's Allison's work has been developed into posters and postcards. Dykes to Watch Out For became the "blueprint for the Bechdel Test."(Ray,britannica) The Bechdel Test shows how much gender diversity is in the films that people view daily. Some of the films that failed the test were The Avengers, A Star is Born, Proud Mary, and Breakfast at Tiffany's. While films like Frozen, Hidden Figures, Bend it like Beckham, and Bridesmaid all passed. Allison Bechdel says "she is not a stickler about the test. If she were, she wouldn't see many movies."(Burgos)
