Health officials in California say the nurse likely contracted the disease after caring for a patient who tested positive for Ebola and was treated at a hospital in another county.
The disease -- endemic in tropical Africa and now making its way into West Africa -- is relatively rare outside those areas. The fatality rate in humans is 50%, according to the World Health Organization.
The Ebola virus is spread via contact with an infected person's bodily fluids, such as vomit, diarrhea or blood.
There are no vaccines to prevent the disease, and treatment focuses on supportive care. That means delivering fluids to keep up the blood pressure and avoid shock, and ensuring that patients receive vitamin and electrolyte replacement.
