AutoCAD 2019 is the latest version of the application and was released in February 2019. It has gained popularity over the years for its unique features, user interface, and wide range of supported platforms.

Autodesk released AutoCAD for Windows and Macintosh in December 1982. When asked why the first AutoCAD was written for the Macintosh, Rudin said, "They had an Apple II, but there was no plan for it. We put out a license for it and people said they would use it. We only had a few developers so we did it in a pretty crude way."
Autodesk was founded in 1976 by two MIT students, Mike Markkula and Paul Flach. Markkula and Flach founded Autodesk on their retirement in 1995. The company name is an acronym derived from the names of the founders, as well as the first letters of their last names.
When asked about the story of how the Autodesk founders ended up founding Autodesk, Rudin said, "After they sold the company they worked for a while and started investing in real estate. They decided they wanted to work on something for themselves. They had a great idea. They saw a gap in the market and realized they could fill it.

File formats 
AutoCAD can create drawings from other applications, called virtual drawings. A standard file format for these virtual drawings is called DXF, which stands for Drawing Exchange Format.
In addition to the standard DXF format, AutoCAD can export drawings to file formats such as PostScript, PDF, DXF/DWG, and aeroDxf. With the exception of DXF, all these formats can be opened by other applications, so they are referred to as interoperable formats.
AutoCAD also has the ability to open DWG files, created by other applications. These are called DWG-Viewer format files. This is not true interoperability because DWG is proprietary and cannot be read by all applications. It is recommended that AutoCAD customers use AutoCAD's own DXF format instead of DWG.
AeroDxf 
AeroDxf, a proprietary format, can be used to exchange aero plans, with information about plans created by other applications, such as Microsoft Flight Simulator, Autodesk 3ds Max and Maya.  The format, which was first introduced in AutoCAD 2005, supports a wide variety of features, including integration with other file formats and a limited form of interoperability with other apps.  However, it is only read by AutoCAD and related programs.  It is not a standard and is not an open standard.  In addition, AeroDxf is not the standard file format for sharing design ideas with collaborators.  For that purpose, AutoCAD supports all the interoperable file formats listed below.
AeroDxf can be used to create aero plans and flight instructions, and to share aero plans and flight instructions.  By contrast, AutoCAD's own AutoCAD Flight simulator cannot create or share aero plans.

Advantages and limitations 
Compared to CAD programs based on proprietary software (such as SolidWorks or PTC Creo), AutoCAD provides an integrated, visual design environment with a common interface across applications, and a large variety of drawing templates and types of entities, such as arcs and circles. In addition, it is capable of automatically creating and updating the data in its drawings.
Some of AutoCAD's limitations are:
 Its primary use is for desktop drafting.
 It is a CAD program, and cannot handle multi-platform, parametric, or non-CAD tasks.
