Business terms indicate what may happen under a given rule, and may include goals that request values (for example, sales revenue) or messages (for example, phone calls). Business terms are therefore the specifications for a rule. The rules are the implementations of the business terms; they are what your application actually does. Rules are how you configure your business logic.
Rule Manager is a “separation of duties” system that is used to communicate the actual rules, and the terminology business terms. This helps users of your rules express their intentions clearly in the business terms, and allows your system to check the rules for consistency.
Rule Manager supports two types of business terms: goal-seeking terms, and event-detection terms. For example, a “Sales Revenue Goal” is a goal that requests a value from your system, and an “Incoming Transfer Object” is an event from your system that allows new objects to be created. Both types of terms are identified by names and short, easy-to-remember terms.
Rules are associated with specific policies. For example, all sales rules are associated with a “Sales Policy”, which you can also configure with goals that request the same value your rules expect to receive, such as “Sales Revenue”.
When a “goal-seeking term” and a “rule” satisfy the terms policy defined for that policy, it “fires” the rule. For example, if the goal “Sales Revenue” is set, and the “Sales Policy” is set, then any rule with the name “sales” will fire when the “Sales Revenue” goal is set. This is illustrated in the figure below.
The left side of the figure is a set of goal-seeking terms, and the right side is a set of rules that fire when those terms are satisfied. Both sides of the figure involve a goal-seeking term (“Sales Revenue”), and a rule (“sales”) that specifies those conditions. The left side is the set of goal-seeking terms for the policy “Sales Policy”, and the right side is the set of rules for that policy.
