The Jak and Daxter games have proven to be the
perfect combination of action and adventure. The PlayStation
2-era adventures have a slightly different look,
but at heart are the same games with incredible voice
talent from John Cleese, Bill Nighy, and comic inspiration
from the original Sylvester Stallone. But what if we could
add stealth to the mix?
Developer Insomniac Games is responsible
for the Ratchet & Clank series, and
the new game Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy attempts
to answer that exact question.
Jak is on the hunt for a thief whose
plans are threatening to destroy the world as we know it.
Luckily he's a thief who can bring down massive machines
by shooting them with a well placed weapon. The game features
an extra character called Daxter, who provides both a different
voice and the benefit of a different character to lead. The
game's foreboding intro sets the stage as the world becomes
a city where every individual dwells in a massive, enclosed
area. Each area is monitored by soldiers and it's Jak's
job to avoid capture while defending his territory.
The game has two modes of play, and
while both are enjoyable in their own ways, they do bring
their own set of issues. The main campaign has the player
frequently completing the same missions, but putting them
in a new area. However, this is where Jak can be most easily
caught, as he can't sneak his way past the soldiers guarding
each area. He must rely on brute force to gain access to
his target's territory, and other characters along the way
bring a nice change to the formula.
The second mode of play is a
bonus mission called "Stormer." In this mode Jak must
travel through the skyscrapers of his world to rescue his
beloved Daxter. This mode starts of slow as players are
forced to explore a huge area in a large, monorail-style
