MMTC's "Champions of Digital Equality: MMTC's 35th Anniversary Kickoff”
On December 9, 2020, MMTC held its inaugural “Champions of Digital Equality: MMTC's 35th Anniversary Kickoff." MMTC President Maurita Coley, T-Mobile Chief Policy Counsel Michelle Persaud, and FCC Commissioner Geoffrey Starks delivered opening remarks. MMTC Board Chair Ronald Johnson delivered closing remarks which included a special thank you to event sponsors. The event featured a Fireside Chat with Hon. James Clyburn, Majority Whip, U.S. House of Representatives, and Ari Fitzgerald, MMTC Board Secretary and Partner, Hogan Lovells. The event included a roundtable and presentation of MMTC’s “AI and Civil Rights” White Paper Series focused on civil rights and artificial intelligence in the age of Big Data, and the way that data and algorithms can either marginalize, or benefit, communities of color. The panelists included: Dr. Nicol Turner-Lee, Senior Fellow, Center for Technology Innovation, The Brookings Institution; Clint Odom, Senior Vice President of Policy and Advocacy and Executive Director, Washington Bureau National Urban League; and Alejandro Roark, Executive Director, HTTP. DeVaughn Jones, MMTC Cathy Hughes Fellow, served as the moderator. MMTC honored one Champion of Digital Equality during the event: Erwin Krasnow, MMTC Co-Founder and Board Vice Chair.
