 3DAutoCAD is a plug-in for AutoCAD, released in 2005, for creating 3D models using the STL and IGES formats. The plug-in allows freehand creation of simple geometrical models.  It is a free, open-source product, licensed under the GNU GPL. 3D models created by this software can be opened in AutoCAD, and the resulting 2D and 3D drawings can be viewed in 3D.  While not a complete 3D CAD system, it can be used to create models with the help of a limited number of primitives and with a limited set of user-defined objects and primitives.  The use of the user interface is very limited.
3D modeling using 3DAutoCAD is accomplished using the existing functions of AutoCAD while adding two additional key features.  The first feature is the ability to create a model from imported 3D geometry (typically created in a 3D modeling program).  The second feature allows the user to specify a coordinate system when the model is created.  Objects created in the modeling program are translated to their corresponding coordinates in the specified coordinate system.  There are three coordinate systems used in 3DAutoCAD, each with its own set of coordinate space parameters. Like 3DAutoCAD, the product allows freehand creation of 3D geometry using 3D modeling software, and the resulting geometry is translated into the coordinate system specified in AutoCAD.  3D-Xplorer is used in conjunction with 3D modeling software as an extension of the CAD system, and is not intended for the creation of drawings.
