History
Autodesk originally introduced AutoCAD in December 1982, marketed as an affordable desktop CAD program for small businesses. Its predecessor was a non-commercial CAD package called MicroCAD and was released in 1972. The first AutoCAD product was a desktop model and drafting application that ran on an internal, desktop graphics controller. The first public demonstrations of AutoCAD were in February 1983.
Autodesk's AutoCAD software application has evolved over the years and now consists of various AutoCAD products. In 1996, the company launched AutoCAD LT (Linear Tape Format), a CAD-like program for Macintosh computers, with a focus on tracing and sketching. In the 2000s, AutoCAD R14 was released as a modernized take on the classic AutoCAD software. The latest AutoCAD was released in September 2013, and has been generally received well.

 Version 2000 (2000–2005) 
 AutoCAD 2000, released March 27, 2000, introduced many new features, including the ability to import and export drawings from other CAD applications such as PTC's Pro/E, DGN, Sketchpad, and other third-party CAD programs, multiple layers, conditional highlighting, a new 2D views, and a user interface (UI) that is intuitive and powerful. AutoCAD 2000 introduced the ability to set a default print setting with the click of a button. Previously, the user had to use the Page Setup dialog box to select a specific paper size. The new feature enabled users to print a design immediately after creation, whether or not they had selected the exact page size.

 AutoCAD 2002, released February 14, 2005, introduced the ability to draw an image and change the scale of it. The user would place the cursor over an image and click the right mouse button. The 'Auto' menu also introduced new features such as a worksheet object, a non-traditional tree hierarchy, a drawtowndo tool, and a new drawing palette. The palette includes all tools and properties available in the drawing. The user can select the category of property using the palette drop-down list. The user can also select a specific tool by clicking on the tool name in the palette.
A new type of object called "group" was introduced to facilitate drawing of groups of objects with a single click. This new type of object also required the use of "stylus" or "pen" commands to change the drawing attributes of individual objects within the group.

 AutoCAD 2003, released September 30, 2008, introduced the ability to have multiple levels of Undo and Redo history, dynamic objects, a new UI, and a new drawing palette.
