In the 2G and 3G cellular networks, the inter-site links typically use a transport network such as the public switched telephone network (PSTN) or an integrated services digital network (ISDN) in North America. Many other inter-site links use unlicensed air-wave propagation, such as the Bluetooth standard.
FIG. 1 illustrates a network topology 100 for an exemplary backhaul network using unlicensed air-wave propagation. Network topology 100 includes a first communication site 105 and a second communication site 110. First communication site 105 includes a first unlicensed device 115. Second communication site 110 includes a second unlicensed device 120. Unlicensed devices 115 and 120 use different bands of unlicensed air-wave propagation, such as the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz bands. The unlicensed devices 115 and 120 may be coupled to first communication site 105 using any number of unlicensed links, such as direct unlicensed link 125. Other unlicensed links that may be used to couple first communication site 105 to second communication site 110 include indirect unlicensed links 130 and 135.
In the illustrated example, unlicensed devices 115 and 120 of first communication site 105 may communicate via unlicensed links 125 and 130. In the illustrated example, first communication site 105 transmits signals that are received by second communication site 110. Second communication site 110 receives a signal from first communication site 105, and transmits a signal that is received by first communication site 105.
An exemplary unlicensed band is a broad range of frequencies, such as the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz bands. These bands are increasingly being used for a variety of applications, including communication over unlicensed air-wave propagation. However, the unlicensed band may be shared among multiple users and other types of devices, as well as interfering with other devices.
Two types of unlicensed air-wave propagation are a bi-directional communications mode and an un-directional communications mode.
