AutoCAD originated from two design programs AutoStyler and AutoCad. AutoStyler was first released in 1979 as a 2-D wireframe drafting program with a print preview. The second part was AutoCad, a 3-D drafting program introduced in 1981, which became a widely used commercial product by 1984.
The first commercial AutoCAD was known as AutoCAD 1.0. The first release of AutoCAD had a price tag of US$1395. In 1983 AutoCAD was launched as a desktop app for use on a microcomputer, with its interface designed to be similar to the earlier AutoStyler. AutoCAD 1.0 was released in December 1983. It was one of the first desktop apps to use a mouse for input. AutoCAD 1.0 was Windows-only, and ran only on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers.

AutoCAD 1.0 was also a desktop app, and offered the same 3-D capabilities as the AutoStyler. The keyboard shortcuts were similar, but with a few differences. In AutoStyler, the Home and End keys were used to view an entire page or design space, respectively, while in AutoCAD, the Home and End keys moved the cursor to the left and right boundaries of a page or design space, respectively. In AutoStyler the Design space was always visible on the desktop, but in AutoCAD, the Design space had to be opened by double-clicking the Design icon on the desktop. (Note that in later AutoCAD releases the user did not need to double-click on the Design icon to display the Design space, as AutoCAD 1.0 automatically displays it every time the user opens a drawing or model.)
AutoCAD 1.0 was designed to work on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. Like many other desktop apps at the time, AutoCAD 1.0 could only be installed on a floppy diskette. For computer users who did not have such hardware, AutoCAD 1.0 ran on mainframes and minicomputers.
Over the next few years, AutoCAD was ported to mainframes and minicomputers, and as such was used as a design tool by many firms such as Boeing, General Motors, Motorola, and most large chemical and petrochemical firms. The costs

Mac OS X 
AutoCAD LT, AutoCAD 2009, and AutoCAD 2010 include a native Mac OS X based GUI.
In addition, AutoCAD LT 2007 includes a Mac OS X port of the Type module from AutoCAD 2008. In AutoCAD LT 2008 this port was integrated into the new AutoCAD LT main user interface and replaced the version of AutoCAD LT from the old version.

AutoCAD LT is available for Windows in two forms. The original AutoCAD LT is AutoCAD-like for Windows and available as a 32-bit program with very limited Mac-like features (notable being the Mac-like UI elements) or as a 64-bit version for use on modern Windows systems (starting from Windows 7) which includes advanced Mac-like user interface elements such as a dock and a spotlight like feature. The second version, AutoCAD LT, is a 64-bit version with advanced Windows-like user interface elements such as a Windows 7-like UI and a Windows Explorer-like feature.
AutoCAD LT was designed to be compatible with a large variety of Windows applications and Mac OS X applications. Therefore, in addition to the ability to natively run AutoCAD LT, all the native elements of AutoCAD and many of the AutoCAD-based applications including ADT, eCAD, and Explorit (formerly AutoCAD 3D) can also be run through an intermediary program such as AutoCAD LT as a 64-bit program with advanced Windows-like user interface elements. The term "64-bit" is misleading; the program files are still 32-bit; it's the entire Windows operating system that is now 64-bit.
AutoCAD LT includes a significant number of other non-AutoCAD-related components, such as MS Office 2007 Professional, MYSQL, Firebird, myPHP, php-ADOdb, netMVC, ADO, Java, and so on.
Windows is supported as a target platform, along with Macintosh, Linux and Palm OS.
AutoCAD LT is included with many OEM versions of AutoCAD.
AutoCAD LT supports AutoLISP, Visual LISP, VBA,.NET, and ObjectARX.
