History
AutoCAD was initially developed by Steve Kardelj and Fran Silvestri of Autodesk.
Kardelj had previously worked as a graphic designer for Westinghouse in its product design and development department. During the 1979–1980 development of AutoCAD, Kardelj was tasked with organizing the computer graphics department. When Kardelj first met with Silvestri, the pair were working with a home-grown graphics program on the now-obsolete Dartmouth Scientific Computing Project (SCOPE) system. Kardelj and Silvestri "wanted to do something better than SCOPE, but they had no idea what it should be", Silvestri later said. After many discussions and many different ideas, Kardelj and Silvestri "hit on the basic concept of a two-dimensional drawing system on the computer", Kardelj recalled, "It was fun to sketch the idea on paper, but even more fun to work on a computer".
AutoCAD was developed in Seattle, Washington in 1982, starting with a small graphics department in Autodesk's offices. Soon after, the engineers and programmers on the project were joined by technical illustrator Jeffrey Olberding.
Release of AutoCAD
AutoCAD was released in December 1982 for the PC platform, and in 1983 for the Apple II, Commodore 64 and TRS-80, followed by the IBM PC. At the time of its release, CAD programs were primarily pen and paper based and required the CAD operator to manually draw each component of the proposed structure.
Compatibility
The first generation of AutoCAD, released in 1982, supported Windows, Apple, and other DOS platforms. The version for the Apple II added the ability to zoom in on specific parts of a drawing. Version 3 allowed for text to be created within the drawing, and for the ability to save as either a PostScript or a Portable Document Format (PDF) file.

AutoCAD 2016 was the first version to include DB2/IBM DB2 as a datastore. AutoCAD 2017 was the first version to be written in TypeScript. AutoCAD 2018 was the first version to include the ability to use the real-time collaborative editing introduced by the latest Revit release. AutoCAD 2019 was the first version to include the ability to create environment-specific CAD files for import into Revit. AutoCAD 2020 was the first version to include the ability to read DWG CAD files created by AutoCAD-X.
