AutoCAD had its origins in the previous software made by Cyril Tansley of Viking Software. The original AutoLISP program was written by Dave Maloney and Guy Simmons from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Later, Ralph Winters joined the team at AutoDesk, later going on to be the Technical Director for the product from 1994 to 1999. When Ralph came to AutoDesk, AutoCAD had a very strong first-release, but as it grew, the product became very messy. In order to fix this, Ralph and a group of programmers started to rewrite the internal LISP-based code into Visual LISP (VLISP), which was an abstraction of the code that was in AutoLISP. With this, AutoCAD became much cleaner and easier to understand. This switch to VLISP also allowed AutoCAD to work on Unix platforms.
In 1998, the group at AutoDesk, led by Ralph Winters, adopted VLISP as the basis for AutoCAD 2.0. The 2.0 version of AutoCAD was much more user-friendly than previous versions. It also included the following features:
