Although Photoshop is not a single program, it is comprised of a number of tools and options. They are often grouped together into one of several panels.
The following section describes the most common tools and ways to access and navigate within them. For more details about specific features and how to use them, see Using Photoshop. For information about installing and updating Photoshop, see Adobe Photoshop Elements.
Photoshop features tools grouped together into toolboxes. Each toolbox contains a particular set of tools related to a specific task.
Toolboxes are organized into smaller panels called panels. Panels may contain a single tool or tools in a group. Clicking on a tool in the panel gives you access to additional options.
With the advent of mobile operating systems such as Apple iOS and Google Android, Photoshop has been updated with mobile apps that offer some of the same features as the desktop version but also integrate with the mobile OS and the touchscreen. Some of the most popular features include touch-based layers, optimized layout for multitouch interfaces, and many other mobile-optimized features.
Layers
Layers are the main way to compose an image. You can add layers to an image to create layers. When an image has layers, each layer has a layer mask. If a particular part of an image is not in need of editing, it is covered by a layer mask so that you can't see it. Clicking on the layer mask reveals the layer. You can then modify the properties of the visible portion of the layer.
Layers can be grouped to create groups. When a group is selected, you see a check mark on a layer mask and the layers in that group are combined. For example, suppose that you have a group of layers that you want to work on as a whole. You can create a new group by selecting a selection in the canvas and pressing Ctrl+G (Mac) or select Edit>Group>New Group.
You can combine groups with the Layer>Merge Group. The resulting group will include all of the selected layers in the group or the selected layer or layers in the group. You can also merge multiple layers to make them into one layer.
You can also create a clipping mask by clipping either the entire image or a portion of the image. A clipping mask is used to create a new layer that represents the cutout of an image.

Workflow

If you have multiple images open, it will be easier to switch to the image you need without scrolling through all your open images.
