1982-1987
In 1982, Autodesk started development of AutoCAD. The first version of AutoCAD was a full-featured CAD program, designed specifically for drawing individual engineering drawings. Users were able to simulate the behavior of physical objects, such as sheet metal, and to design overall systems, such as pipes and plants. AutoCAD allowed for the incorporation of text, symbols, and dimensions. It also allowed for the use of colors.
The basic price of a new Apple II computer with 128 kB of RAM and a hard drive was $1,650 USD. By this time, the Apple II was Apple's fastest selling computer. History 
AutoCAD began as a DOS-based application named Autodesk Architect. It was developed in 1989 by Ray Zinn, then at Arthur D. Little and Associates, and was first shown to the public at the Chicago Auto Show in June 1990. The application was based on the design system created by the late David Colbenson. By 1993, Autodesk acquired architects' product line, including Autodesk Architect, Autodesk Mechanical, Autodesk Electrical, and Autodesk Structural. In May 2001, AutoCAD added Project Review capabilities to its AutoCAD 2000 product.
In the late 1980s, Autodesk's acquired the Amada GmbH program management software, which was used to manage the N-Part software development methodology. In August 1999, Autodesk released AutoCAD 2000, which included two engineering modules.
