AutoCAD Modeling History
The first version of AutoCAD was released in December 1982 as a shareware application written by Niconico Chonmaitree.
Soon after AutoCAD's release, version 1.0, the user base started complaining about its lack of support for imported (non-native) drawing files, namely the lack of read/write support for the PCP, HP and DGN-based drawing formats. To improve on this, Niconico decided to not only rewrite AutoCAD from scratch but also introduce a new file format called DWG.
Niconico, working on a small team within his own home, completed AutoCAD in less than two years. He believed that it would take only another two years to finish and develop the company’s second and third-generation CAD applications. Niconico chose to market AutoCAD as shareware because he felt that a trial version of the software would be a better product decision than selling a non-functional product. When AutoCAD became shareware, the sales went up after he gave away AutoCAD for free. However, Niconico never personally made a profit from the sales of AutoCAD.
In 1995, Niconico left his home company and founded AutoDesk, Inc., which is now known as Autodesk. To date, the first and second-generation versions of AutoCAD have not been officially released by Autodesk. The AutoCAD software received a major revision, version 12, in 1995, and another in 1997, AutoCAD 2002.
By the time version 12 was completed, AutoCAD had begun to be one of the fastest-selling CAD software applications in history, and Autodesk was planning for a three-year-long development cycle for AutoCAD version 13, also known as AutoCAD LT.
