Licensing 
AutoCAD is licensed for use only on a per seat basis, with the sale of each license considered to be a separate transaction. Each license is based on the type of equipment used, the maximum number of seats used, and the level of customization desired. Licenses can be sold by the company selling the software, or by the software's original manufacturer, Autodesk Inc. AutoCAD is one of Autodesk's flagship products and is widely used by architects and engineers for the design and modeling of projects. It is installed by many CAD software programs.
 Autodesk Exchange Apps 
AutoCAD has an online App Store where 3rd party products can be purchased and downloaded. In 2007 Autodesk started selling tools to third party developers to help them build apps for AutoCAD. These tools, called AutoCAD Exchange Apps, allow developers to easily integrate their products into AutoCAD using the API, which is a technical specification made available by Autodesk. At the 2010 NACE confab, Autodesk announced the addition of the API to all of their software.
AutoCAD Exchange Apps are developed by third parties, so there is no official support from Autodesk for the products. There are more than 120 Exchange apps on the market, ranging from programs that import and export DWG or DGN files into AutoCAD, to programs that alter the look of AutoCAD when it is opened.
