@ghetto, I love the idea of text-to-speech, but there are a lot of situations where that just doesn't work. I live in an apartment building that has very poor reception; my cell phone doesn't have voice recognition; and when I'm on the road, I want to be able to read the papers without having to sit in a strange coffee shop and have someone read out the news to me.
So, I went and got some voice-recognition software, which works even better than text-to-speech, since I can record my voice and then read my texts back to me.
And guess what? I cannot read the news back to myself, without mistakes, and it takes just as long to get it right as it takes to get it wrong, and nobody wants to sit in a coffee shop or restaurant and listen to their own voice anyway.
The biggest limitation of that software is that it can only recognize a very small fraction of the words that I use and not most of the ones I use. So it's like I'm reading out of a mirror.
This software, on the other hand, has a large database of people who speak English, and it can recognize a lot more words than the software I mention and it can do both backwards as well as forwards.
I also discovered that a lot of people have trouble trying to read out loud from a screen, since they don't know that it is a screen, and they look in the text and make eye contact with people and cannot see them, but do see their screen. This software makes this easy, because there are no words to read, just a voice to listen to.
And it has taken me only a few minutes to get a good voice that sounds almost like a real person. It's not perfect, but better than anything else I have found.
@ghetto, it's not bad, but it's not that good, either. It gets the words right, but it doesn't always quite get the rhythm right, and I think it's the same thing that most readers do.
I found it mostly quite annoying, because it did not always answer questions and the questions I did put to it were met with great variations in language and mannerism and inflection.
I stopped using it, and switched to a new software that does a lot more. This software is more expensive, but it does much more. It can replace almost any other software
