Modifying a preexisting image
Many photographers start out with preexisting photos that they want to modify in some way. Or in some cases, a client has commissioned a photographer to create an image that needs to be modified because no one else can take the shot in the time frame. In that case, the photographer is required to work in Photoshop to quickly revise an image.
  Consider that most of these images were created with cameras that have limited resolutions that don't let you produce images that have the quality and look you want. If you're starting out, you need to have a decent camera that can record high-quality images. The most basic step to take to improve a preexisting image is to retouch an area of it so that the details are focused on a specific portion of the image.
You can use one of the following tools to modify an image:
  Spot Healing Brush: Select a spot in the image that needs attention and click once to activate the tool. Then drag over the spot to highlight it; or click and drag outside the spot and drag it into the highlighted area to hide the original image. Press and hold the Ctrl (Control) key while pressing the A key to bring up the selection tools and make sure you're selecting the part of the image that needs to be modified. Release the keys to apply the modification to the selected area. See the earlier section "Using the Spot Healing Brush" for more on working with this tool.
  Fade Tool: Select the Fade tool from the Toolbox and click a point in the image, where you want to modify the image, and drag to select the area you want to fade. When you release the mouse button, the image fades smoothly from the white color you selected to the black color that the image's pixels are set to. You can adjust the opacity of the fading effect by pressing the Alt/Opt key and moving the cursor within the image window. (Press the Tab key to move the cursor out of the image and onto the Toolbox or the menu bar.)
  Magic Wand: Click once to select the area of the image that you want to use to modify, and then click again to deselect the area. The Magic Wand tool (as shown in Figure 4-3) helps you find the area of the image that you want to modify while looking for areas that don't belong or

How to Get Started
If you have never used Photoshop before, Photoshop Elements will take some time to get to know and use. Photoshop Elements gives you the full features of the software, all in one program.
The first thing you will need to do is set up a new document. You can then edit images, create new images, or do both.
The following image was created in Photoshop Elements using the paintbrush tool.
Set Up a New Document
You can use any size of document for editing images in Photoshop Elements. The simplest way to get started is to create a small document that is just large enough to fit your test image and the canvas tool.
The image below is the first document I created using Photoshop Elements.
