Sharing detailed real-time data helps give the public a clearer picture of the virus in our community. However, this data and information is only as valuable as our community understands it to be. To effectively reflect the current coronavirus threat in our region, the City of Chattanooga provides several tools to help interpret local and regional data. We hope these tools and resources help residents stay informed and make the best decisions to protect their friends and family. Understanding the data related to COVID can be confusing. What do daily numbers mean and how to interpret them? The Harvard Global Health Initiative has created a framework for understanding the risk of COVID and proposes goals to mitigate or contain outbreaks. The current COVID risk score and criteria are listed at the top of this section. The COVID risk score and images below are taken from data provided by the Hamilton County Health Department. You can view additional visuals and download data collected from the Department of Health website in this local COVID panel hosted by Jesse Houser. Each day the numbers can change significantly compared to the previous day. How do you understand all these changes overnight? When looking at the data, it is important to look at the overall daily trend. Are the cases increasing or decreasing? How fast is the number of cases increasing or decreasing? One way to remove the noise from all the daily swings is to use a 7-day moving average. As complicated as it sounds, it is quite simple. The seven-day moving average is just the average number of cases (total number of cases divided by seven days) over the last seven days. Most of the visualizations below use this approach to show the trend more clearly. Note. This chart shows new cases each day and the 7-day simple moving average. Color-coded risk levels refer to the moving average and are from the Harvard Global Health Institutes Key Metrics System. New daily cases are a key indicator of the progression of the epidemic in Hamilton County. Often the number of cases increases before the number of hospitalizations increases. The gray bars represent the number of new cases in Hamilton County, and the black line is the 7-day moving average. The table is color coded according to the COVID risk index.
