A brief history of AutoCAD:
In 1982, John Walker, a statistician at the University of Utah, developed a new computer program that would speed up the design of furniture. He submitted a copy of his program to Autodesk (a company that produced a popular drafting program named Drafting Workbench for the Apple II microcomputer) as a joke to see if Autodesk would publish it. The program was not rejected, and Autodesk decided to try and publish Walker's program instead. In July 1983, Autodesk published Drafting Workbench, and it quickly became one of the most popular design programs on the Apple II. Autodesk released AutoCAD the following year, and by the time it was released Autodesk had integrated AutoCAD into the AutoCAD Workbench software.
In 1984, Autodesk produced a version of AutoCAD that ran on the Commodore 64, and they also produced a version that ran on the Apple Macintosh. By 1985, Autodesk had produced versions of AutoCAD that ran on other microcomputers such as the TRS-80 Model 100, TRS-80 Model 200, and Atari ST. By the end of the decade, Autodesk was producing versions of AutoCAD for most computer platforms.
The first Autodesk Design Review (ADR) was held in February, 1985, with a number of Autodesk employees attending to review the first public version of AutoCAD.

Released in 1987, AutoCAD 1987 was the first major release of AutoCAD. This release of AutoCAD allowed users to draw lines and arcs without first creating a sketch, as well as colorize their drawings.
AutoCAD was originally sold in one of two editions: either Model M or Model N. Model M came with a disk drive, and Model N did not. Some users were given Model Ns if they purchased their computer from another dealer, and had the dealer install the Model M drivers and software. Some users preferred Model Ns for a number of reasons, such as the fact that the Model M did not have a printer built in, or that the Model M was more susceptible to having a disk error.
AutoCAD Release 3.0 was announced in November 1987, and the first public beta testing of Release 3.0 was released to AutoCAD Magazine subscribers that December.
