Harlem Renaissance
Have you ever wondered how the Harlem Renaissance changed our society? The Harlem Renaissance was an era when African Americans shined and showed their talents. It was an artistic burst that was caused by an expansion of the Harlem neighborhood in New York. The Harlem Renaissance changed society momentarily because it gave African Americans a chance to rise, helped people to realize the talents African Americans have, and it showed us a new culture we’d never seen before.
Many important black authors mentioned black culture and integration in their famous novels. People like Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, and Jean Toomer all used expressed their creative writing styles in their books. For example, ”The Weary Blues”, which was written by Langston Hughes, was created in a poetic style of rhythmic, short lines with a musical quality, or you could take the book “Cane”, which was marked by disaster and anger but also a starving for responsiveness for beauty and spiritual integrity.
Famous paintings created by African Americans gave people a sense of practicality. Painters like Jacob Lawerence and Henry Ossawa Tanner made art that portrayed the life of African Americans. Jacob Lawrence has an unrealistic art style but, it shows stories distinctly and cheerfully. Henry Ossawa Tanner’s creations like “The Thankful Poor” reflected African American life.
African American musicians fascinated new listeners by improvising blues music. Bessie Smith, Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington were some of the few famous musicians in the Harlem Renaissance who included this in their music. Bessie Smith, “The Empress of Blues” was a talented singer that applied the power and the beauty of her voice to songs.
The Harlem Renaissance gave African Americans a chance to rise, helped people to realize the talents that African Americans have, and it showed us a new culture we’ve never seen before, causing it to change society greatly. African American artists, authors, and musicians all bought awareness of the black culture in many ways. They changed the way people saw African Americans by expressing their creativity and talents by showing them to people.
