Along with being an alternative to CAD software on mainframes, AutoCAD was the first desktop CAD program to be based on dataflow. Because of its predecessors, AutoCAD introduced many new concepts. Like all CAD programs, AutoCAD was designed around the concepts of objects (i.e. things), features (i.e. attributes), and drawings (i.e. finished products). Objects are geometric entities. Features are usually attributes or some other technical properties that apply to an object. Drawings are usually logical representations of objects or features. CAD users and programmers defined objects, features, and drawings before developing a CAD system.
AutoCAD files are composed of objects, features, and drawings. A drawing in AutoCAD usually represents a final product, whether it’s a building, a car, or a pipe. Objects are typically used to construct a drawing. Features can be used to make drawings look more realistic. The AutoCAD object model was later used to create the model-based system introduced by AutoCAD LT.
Before AutoCAD, manufacturers mainly drew their drawings in mechanical methods, using a pen or pen-and-ink to trace a 2D view of an existing machine or architectural design. Automated drafting systems, especially on mainframe computers, were used for producing drawings. These systems used outline-based drawings in which features were placed using a simple menu. A mechanical drafting system did not necessarily produce an exact copy of an existing design. The drawings it produced were mechanical, with dimensions that are usually not exact and occasionally have missing features and too many steps (drawings).
Over the years, as AutoCAD's range of applications has expanded, it has evolved into a complete, integrated suite of applications. The development of the integrated suite of applications was accelerated when AutoCAD LT was introduced in 1993. AutoCAD LT was the first application to be designed using dataflow modeling and it is today the most popular version of AutoCAD. The AutoCAD LT dataflow model is a major improvement over earlier approaches to CAD and is the base for all future CAD products.

User experience
AutoCAD was first released in the early 1980s as a Microsoft DOS-based application. The Windows-based version, Autodesk AutoCAD 2009, was released in 2005 as part of AutoCAD LT. The last release of AutoCAD for Windows was the 2011 product line release. In September 2014, the last release of AutoCAD LT was released, while AutoCAD 2017 was released as the final release of AutoCAD for Windows in December 2017.
