A Water and Wastewater Service official told The Enterprise that the water service was restored for all customers in Hingham, Scituate, Weymouth and South Shore communities as of last week. Service may not be restored to those customers for at least a week, however, said the official, who asked not to be identified.
The Scituate and Weymouth customers initially were told that the service was being restored on a “case-by-case” basis. On Wednesday, The Enterprise reported that the service had been restored.
Hingham and South Shore customers are being notified by letter to come back to the Hingham and South Shore town offices to pick up new water service.
A Water and Wastewater Service official said in a letter to the South Shore News that the service would be restored only if the affected customers were there to pick up the new service.
“If you have not been notified and therefore have not come to the office to pick up new water service, the service will not be restored for that customer,” wrote Aileen Cote, manager of Utilities for the town of Scituate.
Cote wrote that the affected customers who have not yet received new service must call the Utilities department at 508-472-6386.
A Water and Wastewater Service official told The Enterprise that the decision to restore water service came after being directed to do so by a state court order, which was issued in response to a lawsuit against the Water and Wastewater Service by 43 neighbors of East Hingham, Hingham and Scituate.
“The department has been directed to restore water service to those customers that had been previously notified,” the official said.
“There were some customers that were notified and (were) just no longer in the right location and therefore have not been notified,” the official said.
“For those customers, I know there is a feeling on their part that they should get their water service back as soon as possible,” the official said
