Ending the decade-long reign of the Windows XP and Vista-style Start menu, Microsoft unveiled Windows 10 with a modern Start menu. Those of you who have been following the Windows 10 build system for the past few months will recall that the company has been trying to implement a new Start menu that looks similar to the one in Windows 7. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, Microsoft has been struggling to get its new Start menu to live up to its high expectations.
As we have seen from our fellow users in the Windows Insider program, Microsoft has made changes to the UI, broken promises, and resorted to causing user confusion about the benefits of Windows 10 by releasing a slew of confusing updates to the operating system. The most recent example of this is the new Start menu that continues to be bundled with the 1511 and 1909 Update roll-ups.
Not only was the Start menu a pretty jarring change for users who were anticipating the return of the classic Start menu (a very good one, at that), but now users are starting to have concerns about the stability of the redesigned Start menu, which again, Microsoft is promising will be a long-term feature in Windows 10. Windows 10 users should not expect the classic Start menu to return, however, because it seems that Microsoft is holding out on the feature until the next major OS release.
A major problem with the new Start menu is that it is missing the Start button, which was the main means for accessing the old Start menu. This means users will need to head to the All apps list in search of a menu and hope they can find something.
There is a workaround for this problem, but it is a bit annoying. You’ll need to disable the new Start menu in order to return to the traditional Windows 7-style Start menu.
First, you’ll need to use the Windows 10Settings app. Open the Settings app and scroll down to update and recovery. Then, checkmark the “Show the Start menu” option to disable the new Start menu. The next time you start up Windows, you’ll be presented with the traditional Start menu. If you don’t like the look of the new Start menu, select all of the checkboxes again, and they’ll be unselected again.
Despite the problems, Microsoft seems to be committed to the new Start menu, which is nice to see. For some time, Microsoft was very reluctant to get into the whole Start button and ribbon business, but the company eventually decided
