History
AutoCAD's development was originally a project of Harry N. Abrams, Inc., a New York publisher specializing in design software, graphics, and books. The first public demonstration of AutoCAD was in April 1981. During 1981 and 1982, the project was managed by AutoDesk (later renamed Autodesk).
AutoCAD's development was funded in part by the CADD Center, an American nonprofit organization which trained many programmers to produce AutoCAD and other CAD programs for microcomputers.
Although its founders were concerned about the decline in the U.S. aerospace industry, which had become increasingly reliant on CAD software, Autodesk initially adopted a business model of selling AutoCAD through the Computer-Aided Design Center (CADD Center) based in Menlo Park, California.
AutoCAD—for the first time—supported 3D graphics on a personal computer. For example, in a 1982 article in IEEE Spectrum, Autodesk co-founder Brian Harry says: "It was the year I actually stopped hating the idea of 3D. The idea was not invented in 1972, but we were the first to make it work. That's right. The year AutoCAD came out we pioneered 3D on a personal computer, opening up a new world of design." Autodesk's Harry said that "AutoCAD on the PC was released before any of its competitors".
For a short period of time, AutoCAD was the only CAD application available for personal computers. Because of this, it was the most successful CAD application on the PC market at its introduction in 1982.
AutoCAD LT (AutoCAD for low-end users) was introduced in April 1984 to complement the original AutoCAD version. AutoCAD LT features a simplified command interface, built-in storage, and graphic windows, but is not capable of running 3D graphics.
AutoCAD WS (AutoCAD for Web Services) was introduced in 1999. AutoCAD WS features 3D graphics capability and runs in a web browser, either on a desktop computer or mobile device. It also features collaboration tools such as Windows Live Mesh.

Category:Telecommunications-related introductions in 1982The European Court of Justice has ruled that the European Commission can force Google to honor the settings of its Chrome browser and remove any search-related shortcuts, search terms or suggestions in a simple search bar on its Android, iOS and Apple Web browsers.
The ECJ’s Advocate General, Max Josef Jäger, said the court had no problem with the EU’s authority to reach out to Google to prevent the company from refusing to honor user settings, in this case, the ability to hide the shortcuts and suggestions that pop up when the user searches for things.
But the ECJ ruled unanimously on May 20, that Google must comply with the request — even though it would contradict its own privacy policy. The reason? Because the courts ruling goes beyond what was asked of it.
The ECJ’s decision was based on the European Union’s decision to fine Google a record $2.7 billion over allegations of manipulating search results to favor its own Google shopping service over those of its rivals, which the company denied.
The ECJ said Google could not operate a browser, take content from it, do the searching, store the search results and at the same time be under an obligation to not honor user preferences.
The ECJ said that Google has no choice but to comply, because it is the service provided to users of the Chrome browser.
“The necessity of compliance with the Court’s decision is not affected by the fact that the same data are made available by way of the same service by other platforms,” the court said. “Taking account of the impossibility of complying with the two requests, the obligation to delete the search-related data… must be interpreted as meaning ‘any search-related data,’ that is, data relating to the way in which the search is conducted.”
