Why should you use Adobe Photoshop? Here's the answer: Adobe Photoshop isn't just a good image editor; it's a full-blown suite of professional-quality graphics software that enables you to design and create anything from ordinary pictures to complex websites, special effects, vector illustrations, animation, and logos.
Figure 2-1 shows the interface of Adobe Photoshop in its default, docked mode. The top panel offers tool controls for working on one or more layers. The _layers_ are configured as individual elements on a separate tab in the layers panel shown in Figure 2-2. Each layer is composed of one or more photomasks, which are like masks that control the appearance of a graphics object and act as fill-in or background areas for the object.
The Layers panel in the Layer (L) menu lists all the layers in the image. Also, you can control the visibility of layers, or more accurately, the visibility of the image on which they are layered. If a layer is not visible, you cannot edit that layer.
  Although Photoshop's layer capability is a welcome improvement, it's still very manual. I always recommend you start with just one layer active at a time; you can add more layers at a later time.
Photoshop has a tremendous number of features for a simple image editor, but what sets it apart from its competitors is the power and versatility of its artistic tools.
To take a quick tour of the Photoshop features, start by using the following steps. If you want more detailed instruction, a series of tutorials called the Adobe Photoshop CS2 tutorials are available on the Creative Web site (www.adobe.com/creativesuite/editor/photoshop_cs2_tutorial.html).
Photoshop starts with a fresh, untouched file, as shown in Figure 2-3. Choose File⇒Open or press Ctrl+O.

You can do anything with Photoshop that you can do with Photoshop Elements, but Photoshop Elements can do a lot more than Photoshop. Photoshop Elements can open and open image files in the RAW, PSD, and EPS format. Photoshop Elements has a much larger file limit than Photoshop does.
