AutoCAD was developed at the request of an architect friend of Ross Perlin. On its development for Unix, the first versions of AutoCAD had a desktop publishing framework for raster graphics and vector graphics. The first version of AutoCAD for Windows, AutoCAD LT, was also released in 1989, as a tool for the construction of engineering models, animated presentations, and film.[3] Autodesk, Inc. is headquartered in San Rafael, California, and its headquarters is situated in nearby Novato, California.[4] Autodesk shares its campus with Dassault Systèmes, the developer of 3D design software.

Two types of products have been developed:
Stand-alone AutoCAD extension products: AutoCAD's extension products consist of Autodesk Exchange Apps, that let third-party companies create add-on applications for AutoCAD that may be downloaded from the Autodesk Exchange App store.
Autodesk Exchange Web Add-ons: These are Web sites that run programs based on the XML-HTTP protocol. When a user of the Web site clicks on a link to the add-on Web site, the Web browser downloads the add-on program. The add-on program is run, and it returns results to the Web site. The Web site may then display the results to the user. An example of this is Corel Business Productivity Suite, a suite of business productivity software products for the Microsoft Windows operating system. Corel offers a number of AutoCAD-based add-on products for the suite.
AutoCAD Architecture
The AutoCAD Architecture is an AutoCAD product that contains three components: a product, a review engine and an extension. The products contain the drawing objects and its properties, making it possible to create and modify multiple layouts of buildings, and to store the changes in the drawing. The review engine checks the consistency of a drawing, and the extension can add AutoCAD's functionality for modelling, drawing, scheduling, creating 2D and 3D views, and to prepare drawings for 2D CAD software.
AutoCAD Electrical
The AutoCAD Electrical is an extension of AutoCAD. It contains more than 150 functions to control all the electrical parts of buildings and structures, such as lighting and electrical systems. The functions are divided into seven groups. Each group has functions to control electrical components such as fixtures, electrical circuits, light switches, metering and power distribution. The electric groups contain both AutoCAD-based functionality and external Windows-based functions. The functions within the Electrical group are divided into electric and lighting groups. The lighting group contains functions that control the operation of electrical lighting systems, including the location and type of lamps. The lighting group also includes functions that control lighting fixtures. The electric group contains functions that control electrical equipment, including switches, receptacles, circuit breakers, power distribution devices and meters.
