History
AutoCAD was developed as a self-contained, integrated CAD product for desktop computers. The idea of its existence came when Chuck Peddie, co-founder of Silicon Valley-based computer graphics company 3D Systems, proposed that Autodesk create a product specifically for 2D drafting and 2D drawing. Autodesk's founder, Gary M. Kildall, was so taken with the idea that he ordered a number of consumer-grade Apple II computers and a copy of Hartmut Esslinger's 2D drafting application, HB 2. In his own words, Autodesk was "born from the idea of taking a set of well-defined, useful tools, from a specific application area, and integrating them into a much bigger system".
The first iteration of AutoCAD, dubbed 'AutoDraft', was built on top of the BASIC programming language. This system worked well for AutoDraft, but it also limited the program's capabilities. Later on, the DEC VAX minicomputer platform was chosen as the CAD system's operating environment, as it provided the necessary processing power and memory needed for AutoCAD.
The first 2D drafting software for the Apple II computer was Docking Station II, developed by Sylvania, a Silicon Valley-based computer graphics company that was co-founded by Chuck Peddie.
