Development history 
AutoCAD was developed by Martin Grossman, a "student-full-time engineer" at Autodesk, Inc., in 1982 to extend what was then their rival of sorts, the design program MicroCAD. This program was developed in the early 1970s at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI), as SGI's first attempt at developing a computer-aided design (CAD) program. This program, known as MicroCAD, was designed for use on the SGI's "Pleiades" mainframe computer.
AutoCAD's development led Autodesk to release MicroCAD as a freeware product. Autodesk decided to license AutoCAD in 1982 to complement MicroCAD's "hands on the keyboard" nature. Autodesk also decided to market AutoCAD as a desktop CAD app to compete against the existing applications on mainframe computers. Autodesk was able to release AutoCAD within two years of its original release of MicroCAD, proving that CAD programs could be released for desktop computers as well as minicomputers. The idea for AutoCAD was the brainchild of Martin Grossman, the Autodesk employee responsible for its development. Grossman was later credited as being the "author and sole contributor" of AutoCAD.
In 1988, Martin Grossman left Autodesk to found his own consulting business. During the ten years Grossman worked for Autodesk, he redesigned AutoCAD's command structure and interface. Grossman later decided to release these changes as AutoLisp, a general-purpose programming language, available for free. AutoCAD was rewritten in its current form in 1995 when Grossman left Autodesk and Autodesk purchased the rights to use AutoCAD and other AutoLisp applications.
AutoCAD 2000, released in 1996, was the first release of AutoCAD to utilize the.DWG,.DGN, and.RAS file extensions. These file formats had been developed for viewing in PDF format. The.DWG file format was released as a direct competitor to the Adobe Systems Portable Document Format (PDF) for viewing vector-based graphics, and was intended to be compatible with Adobe Systems' Acrobat and Reader software. The.DGN file format was designed to save 2-D barcode symbologies for CAD, marking the beginning of the barcode technology used on the AutoCAD platform. The.RAS
