History
AutoCAD was created in the 1980s by AutoDesk in Vancouver, British Columbia. In 1993, AutoDesk acquired A.S. Cartwright, a British company that had created MapPoint, one of the first commercially available GIS software packages. AutoDesk also acquired the company to which it is now best known, 3DVIA, which specializes in importing and exporting graphics and animations.
In 2005, AutoDesk was acquired by Autodesk Inc, a San Francisco-based CAD software company, for US$6.4 billion. Autodesk first offered AutoCAD in 1991, but the product had a troubled start. The company acquired other prominent CAD software companies in the 2000s, including dTPro in 2004 and Maya Systems Inc in 2006.
AutoCAD 2009 was designed from the ground up for open collaboration. This idea was inspired by the AutoCAD LT and AutoCAD Architecture series, which were developed using these ideas, as well as other programs developed by the same team at the time such as AutoCAD 3D LT, an application for 3D architectural design and visualization.
AutoCAD 2011 brought support for the Microsoft Windows 8 operating system and Windows 7 operating systems.
AutoCAD 2015, released in 2013, brought a radical redesign to the user interface, and also allowed for the importation of DWG files from other CAD software.
Licensing
AutoCAD is sold either on an annual subscription basis, with annual renewal or as a perpetual license. Annual subscriptions are offered on a full-time (full-time professional) or a part-time (part-time professional) basis. A perpetual license entitles the user to install and use AutoCAD on as many computers as they choose for as long as they want. In the US, full-time professional and part-time professional subscription licenses are available through a contract with the National Council for Air and Space Education. The full-time and part-time license models have been changed in AutoCAD 2016 to a Perpetual license with 10 years' warranty instead of the old Perpetual license with 2 years' warranty.
