AutoCAD started out as Draw, the first version of AutoCAD was created in 1979 and was called Draw 1. Draw was marketed as a drawing and layout application for drafting and engineering work. The second version of Draw was renamed AutoCAD (the CAD prefix, pronounced "k-a-d"). It became available for use in 1981, and sold as part of a 3-in-1 design package.
