When it comes to distributed systems, connectivity is everything. Improving the connectivity between systems is often the most challenging part of deploying a new network architecture. What if you could test your new networks connectivity before you deploy to your users, or to the production network? What if you could use a tool that not only helped you locate problems with your network, but even help you predict how a problem might manifest itself?

There are some tools that claim to help you to do just that. Among them, I’ve been using Packet Tracer and Wireshark for the last 6 years. I’ve explored many tools in this space and I’ve found both to be useful and effective tools. I’ve also explored a few other tools in this space and I’ve found them to be effective as well, but not as effective as these two.
To be clear, I am not advocating that one tool is better than another – I’m saying that these two tools, and the tools that I’ve used before them are effective at finding issues and they can do so when they are most needed. However, Packet Tracer and Wireshark are designed to be troubleshooting tools (in addition to being protocols analyzers). With Wireshark, you can look at many details about a packet while Packet Tracer is a general troubleshooting tool for networking. Both can be very effective at finding issues.
When I say troubleshooting tool, it doesn’t mean that they only find the problem. They can also help you to pinpoint the cause of an issue before it happens.
To figure out which tool I should use, I built my own network lab to test connectivity between different types of networks.
The Lab
After building my network lab, I’ve found that it is actually not a very good way to test connectivity because the lab is not a good representation of the production network (like, it has no WAN link in a production network). Instead, I decided to implement my own network lab for connectivity testing.
My lab is a virtual lab that you can use with a single host, and I wrote it as a python script that simulates a physical network. If you need to test connectivity to your own lab, you can download the code here.
