Their closest point on the African continent is 100 kilometers (62 miles) west of Morocco. They are the southernmost autonomous communities in Spain. The islands are home to 2.2 million people and are the most densely populated special area in the European Union.4 5 The eight main islands are (from largest to smallest) Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Graciosa. The archipelago includes many smaller islands and islets including Alegranza, Isla de Lobos, Montana Clara, Roque del Oeste and Roque delIt also contains several rocks, including Salmor, Fasnia, Bonanza, Garachico, and Anaga. In ancient times, the island chain was often referred to as the Lucky Islands. The Canary Islands are the southernmost region of Spain and the largest and most populated region of the Macaronesian archipelago 7. Due to its location, the Canary Islands have historically been considered a link between four continents: Africa, North America, South America and Europe 8 . In 2019, the Canary Islands had 2,153,389 inhabitants 2 and a population density of 287.39 inhabitants per km2, making it the eighth most populous autonomous community in Spain. The population is mainly concentrated on the two capital islands: about 43% on Tenerife and 40% on Gran Canaria. The Canary Islands, especially Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, are a major tourist destination, visited by over 12 million tourists annually. This is due to their beaches, subtropical climate and important natural sites, especially Maspalomas in Gran Canaria, Teide National Park and Teide (World Heritage Site) in Tenerife. Teide is the highest peak in Spain and the third highest volcano in the world, measured from its base to the ocean floor 9 10. The islands have warm summers and winters warm enough that the climate at sea level is technically tropical. Precipitation and sea level vary by location and altitude. The archipelago includes both green areas and desert areas. The high mountains of the islands are ideal for astronomical observations because they lie above the temperature inversion layer. As a result, the archipelago boasts two professional observatories: the Teide Observatory on Tenerife and the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on the island of La Palma 12. In 1927, the province of the Canary Islands was divided into two provinces. In 1982 the autonomous community of the Canary Islandswas created. The cities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria together form the capital of the islands. These cities are also the capitals of the provinces of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas respectively. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has been the largest city in the Canary Islands since 1768, except for a brief period in the 1910s. From the territorial division of Spain in 1833 to 1927, Santa Cruz de Tenerife was the only capital of the Canary Islands. In 1927, a decree established that the capital of the Canary Islands would be divided between two cities, an arrangement that continues to this day. The third largest city in the Canary Islands is San Cristobal de Lalaguna (World Heritage Site) in Tenerife. The city is also the seat of the Consejo Consultivo de Canarias, the highest advisory body in the Canary Islands. During the Sailing Age, the islands were an important stop for Spanish galleons on their way to America, which sailed as far south as possible to catch the prevailing northeast trade winds. Etymology The name Islas Canarias probably derives from the Latin Canariae Insulae, meaning Islands of the Dogs, a name apparently derived from the ancient name of one of these islands, the Canary Islands - believed to be Gran Canaria. According to historian Pliny the Elder, a vast number of very large dogs lived in the Canary Islands. Other theories claim that the name comes from the Nukkari tribe of Berbers living in the Moroccan Atlas, who were called Canary Islands in Roman sources, although Pliny again mentions the association of this term with dogs. The association with dogs also remains in their depiction on the islands coats of arms. It is believed that the natives of Gran Canaria called themselves Canarians. It is possible that after the conquest this name was used in the Spanish language in the plural, i.e. treating all islands as islands.
