To compare the effects of a dual mechanism hyposmolar solution (DMS) and standard glucose and sodium chloride solutions on plasma urea and glucose concentrations in critically ill dogs. Randomized, prospective clinical trial. Thirty-two client-owned dogs admitted to a University teaching hospital intensive care unit. A DMS (volume resuscitation, hydroxyethyl starch) or standard glucose and sodium chloride solutions (12 mL kg(-1) over 1 hour) were administered to 16 dogs. Nine dogs received the DMS and standard solutions (control group). IV catheters were placed for administration of fluids and, when indicated, blood sampling; a second blood sample was collected 1 hour after the initial blood sample. The mean ± SD arterial blood pH, base excess, PCO(2), total serum protein and serum albumin concentrations, and glucose and urea concentrations in dogs receiving DMS and those receiving standard solutions were not significantly different. The mean ± SD change in plasma urea concentrations was -1.7 ± 1.3 mmol/L for the DMS and +1.4 ± 1.4 mmol/L for the standard group.
