Shy teenager Hiccup must prove to his father and his village that he can still be a Viking warrior, even if he would rather befriend a dragon than kill him.
The first book, Icarus, in the series (published a year later) was commercially successful but met with controversy. First, readers seem to have immediately "reacted to the book as a sentimental tale, full of tender feelings and drawn with great warmth" (Aberdeen Review); secondly, she "misinformed" the children at a critical moment; thirdly, it was never included in the school curriculum. All of these reports lack serious criticism that could show that they were true.
Much speculation has been made about the reasons why the book missed publication. Her editor claimed that Icarus was only three years old when it was published, which would have been too early for her; a reviewer from Life magazine suggested that the story was too strange and convoluted to be of interest to modern readers, and therefore it was not included in school education. The public reaction in Australia was the same as in America. “Don't forget that Icarus is a Saxon medieval tale. To some extent, she is an apology for Scottish poetry and Celtic mythology, which have been forgotten” (Major Critique). “After the Icarus was shipped to Tasmania, her popularity on the peninsula plummeted, at least until a real cult arose around the first voyage of the first steam ship in the world” (New Scientist). “In 1890, in response to the claim that England would ever sail the seas in steamships, an imaginary battle between Icarus' son and father, a struggle between England and Scotland, celebrations began in honor of the first ferry. Although the book was written as a 'sentimental tale', it was without a doubt one of the earliest examples of what we think is happening today with the so-called 'famous fairy tales'" (Scotland Today).
