Photoshop can be used in conjunction with several software programs to create images that can be included in a host of different tasks. Some of the more popular image hosts or editor programs that work well with Photoshop include Dreamweaver, QuarkXpress, InDesign, Illustrator, Fireworks, Bridge, and PhotoShop Elements.
In this chapter, we introduce you to Photoshop's editing tools and discuss how they work. We also look at a few sample images that demonstrate the best ways to use the editing tools. You should be able to build on these examples to create your own great images!
This chapter is not meant to teach you how to use Photoshop — it assumes that you've used the program before and is more about inspiring you to create your own digital artwork.
On Editing a Layer
A lot of the editing you do to images is done on layers. You might think of an image as being a number of layers on top of each other. When you create layers, you're making your image much more editable and see how much you can do by separating and manipulating each layer individually.
You create layers the same way you create anything else with Photoshop. To create a new layer, follow these steps:
1. Select the Layers panel from the Layers panel tab on the left side of the workspace. You see a number of icons at the top of the Layers panel — the ones labeled in Figure 9-1. They help you identify the different categories of items that make up the image.
2. Click the New Layer icon in the Layers panel.
The New Layer icon looks like an M, and it's found in the third row from the top, as shown in Figure 9-2.
Alternatively, you can click the New Layer icon at the top of the Layers panel. Either way, you see that you get some options as you create a new layer.
3. If you've chosen the New Layer icon option, which appears on the top of the Layers panel, you see a dialog box that offers a number of options, as shown in Figure 9-3, that appear in the New Layer dialog box.
4. In the dialog box, you can choose to create a new layer (if there's any space on your canvas), merge any existing layers (the opposite of creating a new layer), and, for the purposes of this book, choose the Background or an artwork layer. When you

Filter Gallery
The Filter Gallery is a tool designed to create effects and filters. It’s a classic tool used by photographers and designers. You will see this tool when you click on the small camera icon, or the icon that looks like a flower.
The Filter Gallery has presets for various patterns, textures and filters, and several options to create your own.
If you are working on a website for example, you can create a filter with your icon on the web page.
Filters can also be converted to web images, can be applied to your picture in a preview where the status bar will indicate the progress of the operation.
Within the filter section, each effect can be disabled or activated. If you want to make an effect permanent, select the Save as Default button in the upper corner of the filter gallery.
Wings Toolbar
The wings toolbar is located above the canvas. It has most of the tools that you will use when editing.
The tools you will use most are the magic wand tool, shapes tools, the eraser tool, the paint bucket tool, and the pen tool.
A few other useful tools are the lasso tool and the rectangular marquee tool.
It’s a must have tool because this toolbar will provide all you need to edit your photographs.
