In terms of the 1980s mining strike Margaret thatcher was the first female president when it came to Great Britain in May 1979. And On March 6, 1984, the National Coal Board had then announced that it plans to decrease the nation’s coal output by 4 million tons, and this would all be in effort to stem a $340 million annual loss. At the time, Britain had 170 working pits and these pits gave jobs and allowed more than 190,000 people to be employed. Scargill and the NUM had estimated the board’s plan would mean the closure of 20 pits and the loss of some 20,000 jobs.
 Effectively The same day the plan was announced, miners at a colliery in South Yorkshire had enough and decided to walk out on the job. Scargill then used this as an opportunity to call a nationwide strike against the planned pit closures. But one mistake that he did make in terms of this would be that he never held a national vote within the NUM, and not all miners were on board with the walkout. 
Furthermore, some of the worst violence occurred in South Yorkshire, on June 18, 1984, involving 10,000 miners and 5,000 police officers. Also, in addition to these 51 miners and 72 police officers had been injured in what became known as the “Battle of Orgreave“ and as you can see from the figures this was not to be taken lightly due to the injuries also dozens of miners were arrested even then the government’s prosecution of them did not hold much eight and last due to the fact that it emerged later on the police had fabricated evidence.
